Henderson Nevada History
The Basis Magnesium plant that began serving the United States military during WWII
was just the beginning of the township of Henderson. The emersion of the nicknamed “miracle metal” put the city on the map, putting many people to work so that the military would have a supply of materials they needed for things like airplane engines, weapons and a stronger grade aluminum. When the war was over, the town was at risk of being sold as “war surplus” but the Nevada legislature stepped in and signed a bill allowing the land to be sold to the Nevada River Commission. This move allowed for the city to be saved where the residents would eventually enjoy the 2nd largest city in the state.
